What are T-levels and what are the grades worth?
T-levels, also known as Technical Levels, are a new set of qualifications aimed at students aged 16 to 19 in England. These qualifications are designed to provide a mixture of practical skills and theoretical knowledge, with a focus on preparing students for specific industries.
Similar to A-levels, T-levels are designed to be a pathway for students who wish to enter skilled employment, a higher apprenticeship, or progress to higher education. However, unlike A-levels, T-levels offer a more specialized approach by providing students with a range of industry-related skills and work experience.
T-levels are divided into different pathways, each focusing on a specific sector. As of now, there are currently twelve T-levels available across sectors such as Digital, Health and Science, Engineering, and Construction.
When it comes to grading, T-levels are assessed differently from traditional A-levels. T-levels use a grading scale starting from Distinction*, Distinction, Merit, and Pass, similar to BTEC qualifications. Each pathway consists of a combination of exams and practical assessments carried out over a period of two years. The final grade awarded is based on performance in these assessments.
It is important to note that T-levels are still relatively new, with the first set of qualifications being introduced in September 2020. As such, they are still being developed and expanded to cover more sectors. Universities and other higher education institutions are also gradually recognizing T-levels as an entry qualification for certain courses.
In summary, T-levels are a new set of qualifications that provide a mix of practical skills and theoretical knowledge to students aged 16 to 19. They are aimed at preparing students for specific industries and offer a different pathway compared to traditional A-levels. The grading system for T-levels involves assessments and practical exams, with grades ranging from Distinction* to Pass.
